Is Masturbation a Sin or Not??

A few weeks back, My friend Mma and I were discussing the masturbation issue and even though I didn't have any scriptural back up, I was of the opinion that its something wrong. My reason was the simple fact that people who masturbate admit to feeling guilty after the act, besides masturbation is a product of lust which is clearly wrong before God. Just this morning, Mma brought my attention to something interesting, a man of God said Mastubation is not wrong before God as it is something done with your body...hmmm so what about fornication? Isnt it also done with your body? did God not condemn it? Anyways after some extensive research, Mma sent me a mail with the write up below:

"Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything. (1 Corinthians 6:12, NIV) i learnt a lot by researching this topic and this verse especially as pertaining to our last topic masturbation. truth is that sin starts in the mind. that act itself is nothing but a culmination of a complex thoughts that began in ur soul. so the question is when u engage in the act, can u honestly say that thoughts leading up to the act were altogether pure?

Well of course we will never know other than what the person tells us. but God knows all things, that's why GOD is the only righteous judge. this act is one thing that some of us have engaged in the past and may still be engaged in , and i know from experience that more often that not its our way of living out fantasies that we cherish in our minds. and that the thoughts leading up to it are hardly pure and just
. Truth is i haven't seen anybody with a complex word of God in his mind who engages in it and comes out not feeling somewhat guilty of some perversion or the other. its proof that the word complex in ur heart abhors the act, ur conscience does the same. and if that is true, then its wrong. Conscience helps u make distinctions if u gave the right to, it trains ur appetites and desires, but if in the past u listened to it less and less, then it will speak to u less and less until it becomes redundant with regard to keeping u in check and within bounds"

Pls if you are a Muslim or of any other religion (with belief in God as supreme). I'd love to know what your take is on this.

  1. I strongly am of the opinion that masturbation is sin...even if it is done wit d individual's own body,it actually demeans sex which was created by God 2 bring pleasure 2both partners within d confines of marriage. Morever, d bible says dat 'your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit' therefore it should be accorded due respect...

  2. I prefer to keep away from issues regarding religion, especially when such issues question right and wrong. I am a traditionalist, by leaning, and a moralist, by nature. For me the natural thing was to say 'to each his own", but seeing that the party involved is a priest, whether self-proclaimed or not is not much of an issue here, that appear to be going against the tenets of his faith, my moralist stance screamed that he be stoned.
However, before I cast that first mental stone, I paused to ask myself: 'was he really wrong? was his statements just as simple as many are making it out to be?"
Clearly, and the video does bear witness, the man was faced with a very tough question. That same question, thrown to a priest a decade ago would have elicited a very candid and heartfelt "YES! it is a sin!". Now, the priests are more akin to salesmen than teachers of faith doctrines. They now try to be one with the world. Not change it, but assimilate with and into it.
Pastor Chris is one of those people who happen to be in business, only his business is "Christianity" and he needs people, all kinds, for this business to grow. Telling someone not to be guilty about something puts them at ease and makes it easier for them to be assimilated. While this stance surely conflicts with earlier teachings by his fore-runners, pastor Chris is clearly showing signs of the evolution that Christianity is undergoing now.
I don't know if this evolution is good or bad, but it does put the man on awkward footings and cause much of the teaching from the bible to fall on its face.

    1. Mazi: Your comment got me thinking real deep, seriously I am confused at what Christianity is becoming and I wonder just what God thinks of all of these. May the Holy Spirit help us! This is such a topic you have written about here Nonye. Ngoka

    2. to answer your question about christianity evolving if it is a bad thing or not i will tell you one thing it is bad the word of God does not change it is thesame yesterday today and forever . My problem with what PSt chris was saying is that he likened masturbation to a habbit of playing football which i find ill informed i was waiting for a biblical justification on why he said that and i did not get any (you know how naija pastors and pastors allover the world twist bible passages to butress their point)if the sin has to do with the body like he said how come thesame bible says your body is the temple of God. No wonder the catholic church has remained ridgid on certain issues. you do not change the word of God to suit your desires or change christainity Jesus came to fufill not abolish or evolutionalised christainity. Jesus warned us to be watchful and vigilant about these things. we have stoped asking question we just take anything that comes out of the pupit as facts no wonder the pharisees didn't like Jesus he made people ask question and put any doubt in there mind in the open he was an examplary leadr his disciples leart to questions there faith and instead of Jesus feeling treathned (like most pastors will esp that one put there)he explained to them some times using simple parables as examples to butress his point. If he was faced with a really tough question what he would have done is go back and do research like the writter up there did a preacher is not all knowing. i wonder what he would say about drug abuse which is cleary not in the bible but there instructions on that too. we all as christians should start ansking strong questions. like is right for a pastor to have a private jet and the widows child out there has no school fees clothes.christianity has became big business with some us buying into it as share holders. Your tights for example bibilicalyy was ment for widows ,strengers and the underprevilidge and the work of God but today some churches have a thight register emphaing only that your tights should be given to the church why I may ask doesnt that widow need you tight more than the church?. like the yorubas will say OGAAA OO

  4. Let's drop all the philosophy and the ideology of trying to explain simple issues, the bible didn't say out rightly 'do not masturbate' but I know it says expressly 'flee every appearance of sexual lust' masturbation is a sexual lust so the simple answer is flee because its a sin.
Ask anyone who masturbates what picture they play in their head, before during and after the act. Then make your conclusion.
As for a man of God 's comment on the issue I remain mute.

  6. I watched the video on tuesday and i was rendered speechless after hearing chris.o liken the act of masturbation as a habit. after this , i tried to read comments that followed and his followers were all on the same page. i began to ask myself if they heard and watched the same video i just did. i went ahead and replayed the video 5 times. Just pointing it out, for those of us out there that dont have a mind of our own anymore, because we believe someone was ordained by God and he tells us to jump into fire doesnt mean he is right. i have been watching chris o and waiting patiently. This is just the beginning.... Dear kwana or whatever your name is from ghana to masturbate isnt a bad habit(like picking your nose) it is a sin....if it were a habit, am pretty much sure everyman will be on the street doing it. goli.

  7. Very interesting. I definitely believe that masturbation outside marriage is a sin. I have heard different views of it within marriage, but I do believe that God ultimately intended that sexual acts were designed to give pleasure to a husband and wife together, instead of just an individual. I guess this one is up for debate.

The Bible doesn't mention it specifically but is clear on stating that any sexual act outside marriage is a sin. Masturbation is very clearly a sexual act designed to give sexual pleasure. More often than not, it is usually preceded or accompanied by lustful thoughts. Engaging in this "habit" is very very likely to open a person up to constant sexual urges - which defeats the purpose of reserving sex for marriage.

  9. Well said peeps, but my candid contribution will be this, without being judgemental, follow ur heart and decision,if masturbation brings some sort of guilt afterwards then its is a sin, howeva medically it has being proven to be healthy, take for instance an adult of a gud sexual age craves n suffers in silence due to lack of sexual act n intimacy yet no patner, hey nothing wrong in helping oneself out,lol so let's be realistic peeps

  10. At this juncture, it is evident ‎†♓ª† the world needs a global heart transplant as someone rightly said ‎†♓ª† it is possible the trumpet has sounded but we did not hear it.‎(ℓợ̣̣̝̇̇̇ℓ). I still find it somewhat difficult to believe this is true(if actually it is) i read someone asking a scripture where d bible condemns masturbation(now fine-tuned 'self service') ªⁿ∂ homosexuality(not at this time when we are supposed to be working out our salvation with fear ªⁿ∂ (serious) tremblin)g. The truth is this, the word of God is not meant for those who already Ђåvε̲̣ their conscience seared with hot iron, the word of God is not also meant for people of little or ♑ understanding at all(God does not give the children's bread to dogs); so ♑ matter how. Hard they read, they will never get to understand unless they completely yield their hearts to GOD for a spiritual transplant.
Those who happen to be confused by the Pastor's claim should please get a study Bible ªⁿ∂ read Romans 1:21-30 ªⁿ∂ philipians 4:8. A sin is ‎†♓ª† things Ʊ do in secret ªⁿ∂ cannot publicly own up to because of the shame or punishment it may attract. He ‎†♓ª† hath an ear..........

  11. the act is not a sin but its the thoughts that accompany the act that is a sin" ......are you guys shitting me? It is the thoughts that bring the act to life. You aren't going just go and masturbate if you don't feel like it or think about it. Neither will you enjoy the act if you don't mentally commit sin. So in essence, if you have to commit sin, to masturbate then masturbation is a sin.
then his atmosphere for miracles generated so much controversy it had to be banned from national TV; then people started coming up and saying they were paid to stage-manage what happens during the 'miracle sessions';then of course there was the controversy about the Sheraton emloyee; then our "man of God" suddenly shows up with permed hair! And like an epidemic, all his senior pastors follow suit; before our very eyes, he suddenly turns Bishop with PhD attached to his name; not also forgetting his romance with TB Joshua at one time etc etc; and now....THIS!!
By their fruits u shall really know them. I am sure his (blind) followers may wish to crucify me for this post but seriously,if ur biological father was surrounded by SO MUCH controversy, would u not ask questions rather than just blindly supporting him? Its called brainwashing.
Regarding this most current controversy, I am thankful that we have the Bible and the Holy Spirit to tell us what sin is and is not. WE DO NOT NEED pastor anything to tell us his mind on what sin is after all, the bible says the heart of man is desperately wicked!

  12. Pastors are human not God, they teach what they believe or think to be true! On d other hand, u do not need any pastor to tell u whats right or wrong bcs u already kn. You kn better than some of these pastors, trust me!. I pity those some folks anyways! Be watchful guys and pray for Holy spirit to take charge. @Mazi, i respect u for ur opinion. @Nonye, great post.

  13. Pastor Chris is a business man and his target market are "Christians without identity". what do i mean by that? these are folks who do not kn who they are and move about like lost sheep. These folks see the businessman(pastor chris) as God and think his teachings are final. However, a business man operating in a competitive market uses different strategies to keep his customers and also attract new ones from competitors. Now back to Chris, his own strategy is to tell people what they want to hear, so they will remain with him. My people, u do not need these businessmen to go to heaven. Dy r here to make money using the poor and the ignorant folk. Pastor chris is a pure business man. we all seem to suffer from amnesia, if not, one shld hv remembered how ds man start his television miracle back in 1997 when he will blow people and they will fall. He blow a blind man and he will see, he blow a crippled fellow and he will walk. As soon as nigeria became saturated wt pastors, d guy tuk another dimension, He concentrated in U.S, CANADA, S.A AND UK. D other day, i turned a television in u.s and saw him in a paid commercial program televising his church. To show u dt d man knows how to operate his business,he has made his brother a pastor in charge of u.s quarter and d brother is operating from Houston. The business has to remain in the family!! My people wake up.

  17. It's funny that we're in the days that things that looked obvious have become greyed out...I bother when Clerics give opinions that seem like a St Moritz Marketing Executive talking about the dangers of smoking....

Lust and Masturbation are conjoined twins...and I am certain the Scriptures are clear about that..except we have Advanced Kama Sutra as Bible..

  19. "...let GOD be true and every man a liar..." Rom 3:4. It is unnecessary to recite scriptural evidence to NOT support Pastor Oyakhilome's statement. The fact that a 'MAN of God' says something in no way changes the word of HIM which speaks of lusts of the flesh, immorality and uncleanness as being in enmity with God.

  20. It is as simple as it is...the word of God cannot be changed nor modified regardless of who thinks otherwise. Thou shall not add or remove from His word....

  21. I agree with most of the comments here, it is not about the man of God and what his opinions are but rather what God says.
